Dappled Light

This painting is based on dappled light shining through leaves onto the sidewalk. I am intrigued with shadows on the ground, and have been toying with different ideas for reproducing them into paintings. I used part palette knife and part brush for this painting.

Charleston Window Box

I enjoy spending time in Charleston. Like my Key West experience, I can wander these historic streets endlessly and admire the architecture. I love to read all the informational plaques scattered around the city. The gardens, plants and window boxes are superb, here is an attempt at painting one of the gorgeous windows. I tried some new ideas with painting this, the results were not what I wanted as an outcome, but a good lesson.

Now I really feel like I need to escape into these paintings, as winter has geared up here in Maine. Wind chills with gusts up to 45 mi per hour, for the second time this week, and 2 feet of snow. Hard to believe this garden happens here in the summer. I'll dream on.........

I spent some time in Key West, much of the time riding my bike, exploring all the side streets and admiring all the colors and plants and architecture. Now I am spending time there, but only in my mind, painting the experience and trying to imagine being there! It's only January, but I feel the need to escape the winter, way too early. I tried oil on some clayboard samples I had. It is similar to gessobord, anybody know if there is a reason they don't list oils as a medium for these boards? It seemed to work ok for me.
